Placing Headers & Footers
in Word correctly

Here we give you a quick tutorial on how to place a nice graphical header and footer correctly so that your brand is on track and looking professional.

Step 1:
You have your Word document open. Go up to the View menu and click  Headers and Footers. This will be slightly different for some operating systems such as Vista.

Now you have your Header and Footer areas highlighted, click within the Header area so that your cursor is blinking.

Click “Insert”, “Picture”, “From file…” Navigate to where your logo, letterhead or banner file you want to insert is on your computer. Click “Insert”.

You should have something like this…

Step 1

Step 2:
Now this is the tricky bit that a lot don’t do.

Next make sure you have selected your image so that the anchors appear, either ‘double click’ or simply go to “Format”, “Picture…” This window below will appear (see below).

Click on “Layout” at the bottom of the list. Click “Behind text” under Wrapping style.

Once you have done that click on the “Advanced…” button at the bottom of the window.

Step 2

A window called “Advanced Layout” pops up.

Under Horizontal click “Alignment” and select “Left” relative to “Page” (see image below).

Under Vertical click “Alignment” and select “Top” relative to “Page”.

Under Options unclick “Move object with text” and “Allow overlap” then tick “Lock anchor”.

See image below for correct selections.

Click OK.

Step 2b

Once you have clicked OK, the image will move up to the top left hand corner, you need to select the image and drag the right hand bottom anchor holding down the “SHIFT” key out to edge of page so that your header is across the whole top of the A4 document.

IMPORTANT: You have to hold the Shift key down while enlarging or your logo or image is going to look stretched and distorted. This is an absolute no no within company logo brand guidelines.

STEP 3:
Now we repeat the same process for your Footer.

Click within the Footer area so that your cursor is blinking.

Click “Insert”, “Picture”, “From file…” Navigate to where your footer file you want to insert is on your computer. Click “Insert”.

Double click on your image or go to “Format”, “Picture…”.

Click on “Layout” at the bottom of the list. Click “Behind text” under Wrapping style.

Once you have done that click on the “Advanced…” button at the bottom of the window. This is all the same as we did to the Header.

Your “Advanced Layout” window pops up again.

Now this is where it is slightly different.

Under Horizontal click “Alignment” and select “Left” relative to “Page”, same as we did to Header.

Under Vertical click “Alignment” and select “Bottom” relative to “Page”. Marked in red to show you what we do different with the Footer.

Under Options unclick “Move object with text” and “Allow overlap” then tick “Lock anchor”.

See image below for correct selections.

Click OK.

Again, once you have clicked OK, the image will move up to the bottom left hand corner, you need to select the image and drag the right hand top anchor holding down the “SHIFT” key out to edge of page so that your header is across the whole top of the A4 document.

Now you are ready to click out of Header & Footers, to do this you go back to the “View” menu and click on “Headers & Footers” again.

Walla! Well done, you have now successfully made a Word Template for your Letterhead, Flyer etc.

Note: The headers and footers will look screened back but this is at full solid colour when printing or making a pdf.
